Meet Cute: Part Six

I stumbled out of a delicious brunch date, opting to walk the 2 miles home in hopes of shaking off a horrendous hangover.

As I made my way down the sidewalk I could see a little girl and a woman walking towards me, hands swinging. The little girl had a fancy red hat sitting atop two perfect plaited pigtails. She was looking up at the woman, smiling and storytelling. As they got closer I was able to make out the end of her story.

“…and everyone in the whole world has a pet fairy! We are so lucky.”

To which the woman smiled, obviously amused and said, “is that so?”

I started giggling - so in love with that age of girl.

The little girl saw the woman rolling her eyes at her statement and quickly turned to me.

Little Girl: “You know about pet fairies, right?”

Me (covering my smile and snapping my lips closed): “Oh, of course.”

Little Girl: “Everyone has one. You can talk to them and ask them for help when something is scary. They do you favors!”

Me: “I talk to my pet fairy every day.”

Little Girl: “See, mom? We’re so lucky!”

The mother and I started laughing and I continued on my journey home. I don’t know if it was an emotional hangover or if I had really forgotten the feeling of believing in things with such certainty - but I could feel my eyes water as I began to cry.

There’s a lot of scary things in your twenties. We are so lucky.

SCENE

Enter, beautiful//kind//British roommate Holly.

Holly: “Sam! I haven’t seen you but I’ve been meaning to tell you…”

Me: (licking strawberry cake batter off of a spoon) “Wha?”

Holly: I wed David on Monday!

*cue screaming and story telling.

In her ‘mum’s’ old dress (which draped and hung perfectly on her petite frame), with a pair of white boots from the bottom of her closet, a bushel of flowers from the corner bodega and a cake topper from the back of the shop - it could not have been more magical.

(*note: David had to shave everything but his mustache for a film role… & I think the ‘creep mustache’ makes this even more perfect)

David’s ordained friend conducted the ceremony on the rooftop. A handful of others sat loyally in attendance. Holly’s mom snapped iPhone photos. Loved ones across the Atlantic Skyped in on iPads to clap and shout. Holly’s father was beside her via another iPad, playing the wedding march on his violin back in England.

Afterwards, with no agenda or plans - the party moved to Chez Lola… a french restaurant David works at, just across the street. Twinkle lights. An open bar. A room full of wedded bliss.

& the next day, they woke up husband and wife…more in love than ever before.
